Student Employment Types

Work-Study based Employment

Work study provides students with part-time employment to help meet college costs and, if possible, provide work experience in a related field. Federal work study is federally funded and need-based. Information you provides on your FAFSA determines eligibility. To be eligible, you must show need on your federal need analysis report. Some non-need based state work study is also available.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarship Services administers the work study program and provides funding for student employment both on and off campus.

There are three categories of work study:

  • Federal
  • State
  • Crimson Scholar

Work study is funded by federal, state, and/or institutional allocations and is awarded to students who qualify. New Mexico State University contracts with off-campus agencies to employ work study students. Employment at off-campus agencies must be non-religious and non-political. New Mexico State University contracts only with non-profit agencies.

Earnings will vary with the nature of the job, your skills, and the hours you can work. Salaries start at minimum wage and range upward, and most students work 10 to 20 hours a week. Employers usually prefer students to work three or more consecutive hours depending on their class schedules.

Job announcements are posted at the beginning of each semester and are continually updated. Postings are removed near the end of each semester and must be resubmitted to advertise positions in the upcoming semester. See the current listing of work study positions for more information.
