Internship
A one-time, career-related work assignment, which may or may not be paid. Internships are generally reserved for upper-division students (juniors, seniors) as a capstone experience, and are often completed for academic credit. Internships usually span a summer in duration (10-12 weeks), but might also occur during an academic term while a student is attending classes. For more information about internships, Click Here.
Summer/Seasonal Employment
Paid work experience which may or may not be directly related to a student's curriculum, and is not integrated into the academic program. Although not identified as an internship, career-related summer employment may provide the same valuable work experience that more formal work assignments do.
Volunteerism
Developing leadership skills is an expected and companion outcome to degree attainment in post-secondary education. Seek out volunteer opportunities that can enhance the campus and Las Cruces communities while strengthening your leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills by contacting the following websites You may also visit this page for additional sources on volunteering your time in a work-based learning setting.
Service Learning

A valuable teaching methodology that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Critical to this type of learning is inclusion of time for students to reflect on their service experience. Reflection time helps students make the connection between classroom theory and community action, and ensures they understand the extent to which they can impact positive change. By teaching students early on about the role they can play in their community, service learning also encourages lifelong civic participation.
